A life of grace, faith & family — and a joyful toast, too, to her beloved husband Jeanavarre at seventy‑five.
Seventy years of grace. A daughter of Haiti, a mother to many, a faithful servant of God.
This summer, the family gathers to celebrate the remarkable life of Hermène Matheus Barlatier as she turns seventy — and to raise a glass, too, for her husband Jeanavarre, at seventy-five. This is her story.
Born on the fourth of August in Saint-Marc, Haiti, Hermène — known also as Marie — was raised a child of the Gaspard Matheus family: a God-fearing home where faith and church were the centre of everything.
From the very beginning, she carried a curiosity about the world and a heart that reached toward others.
As a young woman, she came to the United States carrying little more than passion, curiosity, and an unshakeable faith. She arrived ready to give — selfless by nature, always the first to look out for those around her.
That open heart would become the thread of her whole life.
Hermène devoted most of her career to social work — a tireless advocate with a deep love for children and education. In time she opened her own childcare, which she runs to this day, shaping young minds to be as curious as she is.
Graceful, open-hearted, and a profound listener, she has a gift for making every child — and every person — feel truly seen.
A devoted wife to Jeanavarre, mother of three, and grandmother to many, Hermène is the heart that holds her family together. As a deacon of her church, she carries God's message into the world — a spreader of love, faith, and unfailing positivity.
At seventy, hers is a life measured not in years, but in the countless lives she has touched.
From Saint-Marc to today — the milestones of Hermène's journey. Add your own memory below and it will take its place on her timeline.
